Snoworks enjoys a long-standing affiliation with BASI (British Association of Snowsport Instructors) going back some 20 years which is flourishing today with all three Snoworks Directors qualified to the highest BASI level and a strong professional training programme actively promoting BASI qualifications.
Phil Smith & BASI - a brief background
In the late 1980's, Snoworks Managing Director, Phil Smith, was a member of a group of ski instructors asked by BASI to completely revamp their existing technical and teaching syllabus. What resulted was the most radical overhaul of ski technique for decades and the creation of a totally new skills-based skiing and ski learning philosophy.
At the same time, Phil co-founded Britain's first ever 'ski courses' company, pioneering the way for a radical change to the delivery of ski teaching services, offering a more personalised, informal and yet more focused approach, keeping clients skiing on the move, thanks to smaller groups and new ski teaching methods. Today, the Snoworks programme is one of the most comprehensive Pro Training programme available with training for BASI levels 1, 2, 3 ISIA, 4 ISTD.
New Official Instructor-Trainers for the Association
Recently, Snoworks Directors Emma Carrick-Anderson and Lee Townend became Instructor-Trainers for BASI, being recognised as having the skills to train other ski instructors. Amongst their role of training, they will also be responsible for assessing and ensuring qualified British instructors remain world class.
BASI instructors are world renowned for teaching skills. Unlike other European countries that have ‘racing’ as the foundation of many of their qualifications. BASI has always valued core teaching skills. This has led to British instructors developing great empathy for their students.
Although BASI has had to incorporate racing into their higher qualifications, fortunately this has not affected the core skills that BASI has always valued - teaching methodology, understanding the principles of skiing performance, safety and customer service. BASI instructors remain some of the most sought after in the world.
Looking to the Future
Snoworks is looking forward to running many more GAP and PRO courses and so increasing the number of potential instructors for assessment and into the BASI system. The addition of both Emma and Lee into their training staff will only help to increase the professionalism of BASI and further endorses the reputation of Snoworks as a serious, recognised BASI instructor-training centre.
