Telluride 2015 – Feb 9th to 21st

Lee Townend, Snoworks Instructor, gives the rundown on Telluride.

2014 Telluride has to go down as one of my favourite trips so far. Outstanding company and outstanding skiing and to cap it all we had the chance to ski with one of my childhood heroes Scott Kennet. Provided to us by the Telluride Ski School as our host and guide. Scott kennet for those that remember him starred in one of the greatest ski films ever made the ‘Blizzard of Aahhhs’.

The Blizzard of Aahhhs was about Glen Plake & his merry men skiing the bowls and ripping the bumps of this old mining town with resident town council man Rasta Stevie. Telluride is located amongst the greatest amount of 14,000ft peaks in North America, in the San Juan Mountains of Southwest Colorado. 18 lifts, 125 trails lined by stunning gigantic evergreens with the longest run at over 7k. A base station at 2,600m (Tignes is 2,100, Courchevel 1850m) and a top station of 3,800m with terrain of over 4,000m above this!

The famous hike-able terrain means you can ski from the dizzy height of over 4,000 from the summit of Palmyra peak. Hikes as short as 15 minutes to 2 hours can take you to the famous couloirs of  ‘Bald Mountain’ (20 mins), ‘Gold Hill Chutes’ (15 -30 mins) and ‘Black Iron Bowl’ (5-30 mins).

The ‘trail’ names are entertaining and typically American with names like ‘Galloping Goose’, ‘Cake Walk’ and ‘Lower Happy Thought’. All groomed to perfection, a carver’s dream. There are fabulous off-piste & powder chutes and you also have probably the world’s longest, most magnificent, mogul fields. Telluride’s moguls have something different that I find hard to put into words but ‘perfectly formed’ would probably cover it.

The Town of Telluride is in San Miguel. A former silver mine where the ever present remains of this old historic village add to Telluride’s appeal. Bars with saloon style swing door, every other shop selling Stetsons and leather boots and the original bank that Butch Cassidy held up in 1889. It feels a world away from any other ski resort you can think of. The cultural, relaxed and historic feel of the town town partnered with the modern, trendy and stunning ski village give Telluride tonnes of appeal.

In 2015 we’ll be travelling in the middle of February in order to make the most of the amazing powder that is synonymous with Colorado. This is certainly the place to go if you want magnificent scenery, powder lined tree chutes, steep skiing and world class moguls. Get it booked, you won’t regret it.
