“Goodbye Turns, Hello Curves!”
Intermediate skier and first-time Snoworks client, Maria Marcon, shares her thoughts after a week on a Snoworks iSKI Piste Performance course.
“Forgive, rather than forget, the way you’ve probably learned to ski. Because, if like I was, you are still talking yourself down every slope, then you’re tapping into knowledge carried forward from the last millennium.
According to our Snoworks instructor, Lee, ‘developing skills’ not ‘learning techniques’ is the gateway to skiing nirvana.
And despite my initial scepticism, after a week on a Snoworks Piste Performance course, I am now skiing without the voice in my head or my toes curling; and most importantly, skiing with renewed purpose and ambition, down slopes that once caused me to freeze with fear.
The all-mountain skiing revolution might sound like some sort of marketing ploy to get you to spend money on ski tuition you don’t need; but actually it’s much more profound than that.
Skis are now two-thirds shorter since all-mountain skis were introduced and as a result, far easier to turn. But that’s only the tip of the iceberg.
At last, I am on my way to being able to ski how I’ve always wanted to… moving faster, more controlled and believe it or not, more relaxed too!
Skis aren’t only shorter, they’re wider too, preventing them from sinking in deep snow… hence the ‘all-mountain’ potential. They’re also more ‘waisted’ for easier carving on-piste and steering off-piste… where the full value of the all-mountain skiing skills, snow and mountain knowledge comes into play.
Since my week with Snoworks, I now make ‘curves’ instead of turns, focus on pushing and edging (and twisting!) skills, rather than worrying about the angle of the slope, the snow conditions and whether I’m doing the right thing!
At last, I am on my way to being able to ski how I’ve always wanted to… moving faster, more controlled and believe it or not, more relaxed too!
I have never skied so much of the mountain in my life – and this was a Piste Performance course…
