Spain Backcountry 2020

Bienvenido and welcome to the Spanish Pyrenees and our third year in the fabulous resort of Baqueira Beret in Spain. 2018 saw our inaugural visit to this area and what a trip it turned out to be. It was ‘Course Of The Year’ with more powder than ever, amazing off-piste routes and Spanish culture to go with it.

Continuing the Snoworks philosophy of ‘Skiing The World’ looking for amazing skiing destinations and great cultural experiences we’re pleased to head back to Spain’s top ski destinations for a third consecutive season.

Why Baqueira Beret?
Our philosophy at Snoworks is to ski the world looking for great skiing and great experiences whilst immersing ourselves into all the different cultures around the world.

“I’ve spent rather more than half a lifetime looking for the perfect ski resort. To my intense surprise, I found it – in, of all places – the Spanish Pyrenees” read more.

We’ve opted again for a Backcountry Off-Piste Course with the use of skins to make the most of this fantastic off-piste ski area with the course open to Snoworks levels 5, 6 and 7.  If unsure please contact our office.

What can you expect from the Baqueira Beret Backcountry?
Drop off the back of the Lluis Arias black run, and you are into “Escornacrabes”. Escornacrabes translated means ‘tumbling mountain goats’ or ‘where goats fall’ so that gives you an idea of the steepness at the top. Bit to steep? Then select one of the other entries lower down such as “Marconi” and “Paserell”. Drop of the top of the Dossau chairlift and you can ski down to the abandoned village of Montgarri ending with lunch then hold on to your hat for the ride back behind a skidoo. We can use the skidoo to return from numerous other off-piste descents in this area. Return skidoo rides from off-piste descents work out at around 20 euros for the first return then 15 after that but it’s well worth it and definitely more exhilarating than sitting in a taxi.

From The blanhiblar chairlift a 100 metre traverse and you are into another valley with an off-piste descent to the village of Bagergue with a taxi back this time. No hanging onto a skidoo.

Head further afield for even more off-piste with an excursion to the nearby resort of Boí Taüll and the icing on the cake a half day or full days heliskiing (at a supplement). Now that’s what we call off-piste skiing.

Back in the resort of Baqueira itself the lift system spans 3 areas, Beret, Baqueira and Bonaigua, offering ample inbound off-piste and many more options.

The course will be run as a ‘Backcountry Course’ so the emphasis will be on amazing off-piste skiing and downhill off-piste descents. However to make the most of this area all course participants will be using skis with touring bindings and skins. This opens up many more off-piste options and greatly increase the off-piste potential. If you do not have skis with touring bindings and skins we can organise this for you locally.

The course is open to 24 skiers each week. 2 Snoworks instructors will host and lead the trip and like most of our adventures we will be joined by a local UIAGM Guides.

Accommodation, Flights, Transfers
We’ve organised the trip in conjunction with local company Ski Inspired, run by Tim and Annete Eyte. Tim and Annette have been in Baquera Beret for years with their family and are very well connected in the resort.

We’re staying at the well priced Tuc Blanc hotel. A great location, right opposite the ski slopes, makes this the ideal base for our course. There is a team of physiotherapists ready to give rejuvenate your legs after a day’s skiing, a swimming pool, sauna, jacuzzi and even a hairdressers if you need grooming for those cherished powder shots! The Tuc Blanc boasts their restaurants and tapas bar as being among the best in the area.
